Diplomatic Language in Sony Labou Tansi’s La Vie et demie: Critique, Resistance, and Postcolonialism

This article offers an in-depth analysis of diplomatic language in Sony Labou Tansi’s La Vie et demie (1979), revealing its protocolary, rhetorical, neocolonial and resistant functions. Through a pragmatic, discursive and postcolonial reading, it highlights how official discourse, in all its complexity, serves both to legitimise tyranny, conceal violence and provide spaces for resistance. Labou Tansi’s writing unveils the performative dimension of totalitarian discourse, whilst exploring its subversive potential. The staging of rituals, formulae, metaphors and codes illustrates the dual dynamics of power : its construction and its challenge. Ultimately, this article demonstrates that diplomatic language, within the novel, is a central issue in resistance and the postcolonial struggle for symbolic sovereignty.
